Healthy Yimbits

Food isn't just for tasting delicious, smelling divine and looking irresistible.  It's also medicine.  When we pick up an apple for an afternoon snack we usually don't think too much about it.  It's sweet, has a nice texture and satisfies hunger.  However, the humble apple is so much more than that.  It's soluble fiber for cleaning out your arteries, it's vitamin C for supporting your immune system, it's vitamin A for eyesight and it's potassium for good heart health.  Packed into that one piece of fruit is so much goodness and nutrition.  A whole medicine bottle wrapped up in a pretty package!

When we prepare and consume food, we need to look at not just the effect it has on our senses but also the health benefits.  Healthy Yimbits are bits of information on the food I prepare in the Menu Planning Service.  Once you get going on the program the Healthy Yimbits show you how healthy the food is.

The Bits

Many of my clients, once on the program, find they have more energy.  When you consume nutrient dense foods your body can't help but rejoice and feel great!  Here are some reasons why:

Homework

I encourage you to take a closer look at one of your meal's.  Get the kids involved in the research and tallying.
Here's what you need to do:

  • Record everything you eat at a regular meal.  You'll need to include the quantity.
  • Go to http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/000020.html and follow the directions for finding out the nutrient content of your food items.
  • Check out only these specific nutrients: Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Fiber.
  • Total each of the nutrient amounts.
  • Compare to the RDA: Calcium- Iron- Magnesium- Vitamin A- Vitamin C- Fiber-
  • Do this for all the food you consumed in one day.  Compare to the RDA's.
  • If you are not getting the full amount of any one nutrient you need to eat foods that will give your body what it needs and craves!!
  • Keep checking Healthy Yimbits as more good food information will be added weekly!
